Theo and his friends overcome so much everyday! Your love and support continue to encourage all those affected by this heartbreaking disorder, Alternating Hemiplegia of Childhood, especially our children living with AHC.
Over this past year, Theo has really blossomed. He started to explore the excitement of taking a few independent steps, communicating both with speech and his device, and going to preschool with his wonderful 1:1 aide and teachers. He is able to tell us when an episode will start and is experiencing more mild, hemiplegic episodes and fewer severe, quadriplegic episodes. Even with all his positive progress, he still can’t experience the pure joy of laughing so hard that it makes you cry or enjoy a day at the beach. It’s so hard to tell Theo to calm down and take away the activity that brings him so much joy and laughter to prevent an episode. Or, to tell him he only has 10 minutes to play on the playground. It’s a challenge living with the unpredictable nature of AHC and to always monitor his environment/body to minimize episodes. That is why we race. We race to find a cure for our children, so they can enjoy every moment to the fullest and live healthy, normal lives that every child deserves.
